The Link Between Stress and Depression

Stress is often referred to as the 'silent killer' due to its effects on the body over time. One more subtle negative side effect of increased, long term stress is depression, affecting millions of people around the globe. It is important to point out that stress is a normal response for the body to a variety of regular stimuli. The concerns surrounding stress are derived from its possible long term effects if left mismanaged.

Scientific studies over the past few years point to a correlation between individuals experiencing elevated anxiety (stress) and depression. Depression is most likely to develop when an individual experiences compounded stressors from a variety of facets of their lives. When multiple stressors affect an individual who is not properly equipped with coping mechanisms can develop depression as a result.

Change can also be attributed to individuals experiencing depression. When someone undergoes a variety of changes within their lives, particularly when over a short period of time, they are susceptible to developing depression symptoms. Common changes that present challenges include moves, divorces, births, deaths, job changes and financial challenges. While any one of these changes on their own may not be significant enough to produce depression symptoms, when they are compounded together over a short period of time, they can challenge an individual's body.

As stressors develop, individuals may feel their mind and body shutting down. When this occurs, fatigue increases, sleeping increases and it can be challenging to endure day to day tasks and requirements.

But, there is good news. Individuals who learn how to effectively manage stress within their life over time experience less incidences of depression. So, while there is a proven link between stress and depression, proactive lifestyle changes and habits can reduce the overall effects that stress can negatively have on the mind and body.

Home Body Wrap Kits

Let's face it many Americans are overweight. Medical centers, T.V. shows, and magazines have been trying to provide ways for people to lose weight fast. Some of these quick weight loss alternatives have been successful, while others have failed miserably. Body wraps are a relatively new way of losing weight quickly.

Different ways of receiving these wraps exist. You may have seen or heard of a local shop that offers them. These shops have people who are experts and will do all of the hard work for you. If you don't have a local shop, chances are that one of the major spas in your area will offer to wrap you up (for a price of course).

An alternative to a local shop or a spa is a home body wrap kit. You can purchase the kit online, have it shipped to you, and perform the wrap yourself (or with the help of a friend).

Benefits of a Home Kit

The main advantage of the at home kits is that you will likely have more privacy. A lot of body wraps require you to be completely naked for the wrap to be administered, although more and more wraps can be applied over thing layers of clothing. Some people are uncomfortable with having strangers wrap them up. For these people a home wrap kit may be the answer.

Another advantage of purchasing a home wrap kit is that you don't have to leave your house to purchase it. Sometimes it is nice to do all of your shopping from your computer.

Disadvantages of an At Home Kit:

The main disadvantage of wrapping up at home is the workload. You have to mix any special ointments that will be applied, soak the wrap, apply the wrap to yourself, and if that isn't enough you have to clean up after you have finished (some wraps can get a little messy). If this sounds like too much work for you, then going to a local shop may be the answer.

Another disadvantage of doing the wrap at home is that you may not be wrapping yourself correctly. Maybe you are wrapping too tightly or not tightly enough. You may be doing it exactly right, but you still might wonder if you're doing it correctly.

Benefits of Going to a Shop:

The people at the body wrap shop do all of the hard work for you; you simply have to show up, pay them, and let them go to work. It is likely that they have done this hundreds of times, so you'll feel confident that they are doing it correctly.

Disadvantages at the Shop

The main disadvantage at the shop is that you may feel uncomfortable having someone you don't know that well wrap up your body. These shops also tend to have the same type of employees as Tanning Salons (blond, skinny girls). Another disadvantage may be pricing, as you're not only paying for the supplies, but the service.

Body wraps can be a lot of fun, and they can be a great way to lose weight. Whether you decide to do it yourself, or go to a shop, best of luck with your weight loss goals.

Cigarette Smoking - A Cause of Your Child's Asthma

It is true that we all care for our children. We can do virtually anything to keep them hale and hearty. They are our bundles of joy and we are happy if they are. If this is so, why our men and some women do not comprehend the effects of passive smoking on them? Well, may be we are not aware about it. Rather, we do not tend to comprehend unless our children suffer from some or the other problem due to our smoking. Do you know that a nasty asthma spell that made you and your child sleepless whole night can be due to your smoking?

Here are some hard facts about effects of passive smoking on children:

(1) Children are in growing stage and they have faster breathing rates than adults. This makes them more vulnerable to cigarette smoke because they inhale more smoke.

(2) Research shows that children growing in smoky houses develop respiratory and other allergies more (almost twice) than those growing in smokeless atmosphere. Even the rates of hospitalization are more in these children.

(3) Children who smoke passively are seen to have more behavioral problems than others.

(4) The mental development in such children is also seen to be subnormal in some cases.

(5) If the child already has mild to moderate asthma, he or she is likely to get more frequent attacks in smoky homes. Also the symptoms like shortness of breath, chest tightness, cough, wheezes, etc are much severe in these children.

(6) Some studies revealed that the learning abilities are pretty much compromised in children growing in smoky homes, though the exact cause could not be traced. Mathematics, reasoning abilities, logic, and reading are seen to be affected more.

(7) These children showed conflictive tendencies while dealing with their peers and school teachers. A confused type of behavior was also reported.

(8) When both parents smoke, the child is seen to be absent from school more often due to respiratory illnesses than those children who have habit-less parents.

(9) Even children who are not born with asthma are more likely to develop it even before second birthday.

(10) Secondary smoking means more colds, coughs, and sore throats.

(11) Even some children need ear draining due to accumulated wax due to passive smoking.

(12) These children have higher risk of developing lung cancer in adult life than children who do not smoke passively.

(13) Low birth weight babies are born to parents who smoke. Obviously this is the reason of many future maladies right through childhood and adulthood.

(14) If mother is a smoker, the baby has twice more risk of dying a cot death than the baby whose mother doesn't smoke.

(15) Recovery time is much longer in children from any illnesses who are passive smokers.

Well, from the above facts, don't you think that the babies are amazingly fortunate whose parents do not smoke? Yes, you are right to think that. All the men's health and fitness and women's health and fitness magazines shout about the negative impacts of passive smoking on our children. If still you do not stop smoking, it indicates you do not love your children!

Guidelines For Weight Loss After Baby

It is not difficult to lose weight after baby. What is important is how you go about it. Here are five guidelines that can make your task easier:

1. Minimum time to lose weight after baby: On an average, women gain 25 to 35 pounds during the course of pregnancy. Of this, almost 12 to 14 pounds is lost during childbirth. You need six to eight months to lose the remaining 12 to 20 pounds. However, your clock to lose weight after baby will start four to six weeks after childbirth.

2. Importance of breastfeeding in weight loss: Yes. It is the natural way to lose weight. You produce around 850 ml of breast milk every day. To produce this, your body needs to burn at least 200 to 500 calories.

3. Time to start exercises: You need to give yourself four weeks in case of normal childbirth and six weeks in the case of C-section. Also, in the case of C-section moms, the exercises to lose weight should be started only after consulting the doctor.

4. Pacing yourself: You should never be in a tearing hurry to lose weight after baby or else you will cause serious damage to your body. Ideally, you should start with a low impact or light exercise like walking. Even this should be limited to say ten minutes to start with. Gradually, the duration of the exercise should be increased. You can then yoga, an exercise that can be done at home. The other exercises that you can do at home are pilates, Kreger crunches and pelvic lifts. While doing these exercises you must make sure that you don't feel dizzy or tired.

5. Shift to healthy food: Your diet has a big role to play both in your recovery and in losing fat after baby. It is also a natural way, and requires no extra effort. Your doctor or dietitian can easily work out a healthy and nutritious diet for you. Ideally, it should include low fat food, generous sprinkling of vitamins, and fibers, and lots of fluids.
