Lose Weight & Watch the Fat Drop Off

Are diets worth the paper they're written on? And how do you stop them from yo-yoing out of control?

Is exercise the only way to lose a significant amount of weight? Does it have to be punishing in order to be productive?

Or is there an easier way to shed those unwanted pounds?

The problem with weight loss isn't the act of losing weight: it's finding the motivation to stick to a regime and see it through. You end up caught in a cycle of dieting and not dieting, exercising and not exercising, that does more harm than good. So what's the solution?

In the absence of a magic pill that does everything for you, the answer is to turn bad habits into good ones and make them part of your daily routine.

The average American spends a small fortune on diet supplements, miracle cures and exercise equipment. But without the right guidance or support, these things are useless. Wouldn't it make more sense to combine these efforts into a positive lifestyle change?

It doesn't have to be a total change, though, which is where some people go wrong. Here's an example of the simple steps you can take that'll make a big difference:

  • Walk for a few minutes every day
  • Try to avoid sweet or fatty foods between meals
  • Eat a piece of fruit after your lunch
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Garnish your main meal with at least two types of vegetables
It's not exactly brain surgery, but these basic improvements will help you get in shape and feel better than you have in years. But they're not drastic enough to cause you any pain or discomfort.

Calories can be shifted just by walking the dog or weeding the garden. And if you eat fruit and vegetables and drink a few glasses of water each day, the combination will gradually help you lose weight naturally. All you have to do is: do it.

Diet and Kidney Stones - What You Need to Know

It is almost common knowledge that when a person suffers from kidney stones, he or she is in a great deal of pain. Although kidney stones are often linked to genetics, your diet can also be a factor. It has been proven that in many cases diet and kidney stones can be linked together.

Here are some suggestions to assist you in keeping your diet and kidney stones under control. The most important thing for you to always stay on top of is drinking plenty of fluids. Dehydration is a large, heavily weighing factor in the formation of many kidney stones.

More than likely your medical care professional is going to do some testing in order to determine the type of kidney stones you have. Because there are different types of kidney stones, there are different methods for treating them and minimizing the possibilities of new ones forming in the future.

One of the common types of kidney stones are calcium stones. In the event this is determined to be the type of kidney stones you have, your medical care professional might suggest that you reduce the sodium and salt intake in your diet. Generally, a doctor will suggest you limit your sodium to about 3,000 mg per day at the most.

Another common kidney stone is one that is formed from oxalates. With this type of kidney stone it is wise to limit the amount of foods you consume that have oxalates in them. Here are a few of the foods you might need to avoid because they are high in oxalates:

* instant coffee
* dark leafy greens
* draft beer
* peanuts
* oranges
* sweet potatoes
* strawberries
* tea
* beets
* tofu
* concord grapes
* rhubarb
* chocolate
* beans
* blackberries
* gooseberries

As previously mentioned, fluids are vital to eliminating kidney stones of all types. Water is going to be the best liquid for you to drink. It is suggested that a person drink about 8oz of liquid (non alcoholic) every hour.

Although almost any liquid is going to prove to benefit you, you should avoid grapefruit juice and any other citrus fruit juices. Try to drink juices that are all natural if you will be drinking fruit juices.

Another modification used for controlling diet and kidney stones is avoiding animal protein. You might also want to discuss with your doctor the benefits of incorporating a vitamin supplement into your daily routine. However, before you make any changes to your diet it is of the utmost importance that you first speak with your doctor.

Liquid Calories - Weight Loss Killer

The most dangerous source of calories in your diet are liquid calories. If you want to lose weight then you need to cut out liquid calories in all but one situation. First we will look at the problems associated with liquid calories specifically high-fructose corn syrup. Then we will look at how to use artificial sweeteners to wean yourself off you liquid calories. Finally, I will show you the one time during your day when you should drink your calories and why.

The danger of drinking your calories - excess sugar. The main type of sugar found in sweetened beverages is high fructose corn syrup. High-fructose corn syrup is metabolized a little differently in your body than other types of sugar. The main reason that it is bad for you is because it is used in such abundance. While it is popular for many nutritionists and experts to currently bash high fructose corn syrup due to its biochemical differences that is really the least of anyone's problems; abundance is the issue as overuse of sugar in food is bad for you.

The reason high-fructose corn syrup is used is it's a lot more inexpensive than table sugar, or at least it used to be. Since the price of corn is going up, high-fructose corn syrup isn't as cheap as it used to be. It is overused because it is sweet and it's very inexpensive. As the price of corn increases it will be interesting to see what food companies do as high fructose corn syrup because more expensive.

If you are currently drinking a lot of calories, you need to begin to remove them from your diet. What is the best way to start? The first step is cutting out processed foods. You will naturally reduce your consumption of sugars when cut out processed foods. You may have a sweet tooth or a sweet craving when you first reduce your carbohydrates and processed foods. It is natural to have these cravings, because all of a sudden there's a void in your diet that your body was used to.

One thing that you can do to curb your sweet too is to use a little artificially sweetener like Splenda instead. This is a good approach for a long term but suppose you want to switch from drinking soda to green tea. You're trying to drink the green tea cold and it doesn't have the sweetness that you are used to; you can add a little Splenda to it. As weeks go on you can add less and less. Soon you will be drinking cold green tea straight, and you will love it. Using artificial sweeteners is a very simple and effective way to wean your system off sugar and liquid calories

There is one time during the day that is it 'okay' to have a sugary drink. This is during and after your workout. During those times your body is primed to take those sugars and put them to good use (i.e. refuel your muscle, recover from your workouts, fuel the building of new muscle). So sugar isn't necessarily bad; the timing of consuming sugar it what is important.

The take home points to remember from this article are that: 1. Liquid calories can quickly sabotage your weight loss because it is very easy to consume a lot of them fast. 2. Using small amounts of artificial sweeteners is a good way to wean your body off sugar. 3. During and after your workout is a great time to have a sugary recovery drink as your body is primed to use the sugar for recovery and growth and not packing on body fat.

The Psychology of Drug Addiction

There is, of course, a reason why people become addicted to drugs. The psychological aspect of addiction is extremely powerful. The human mind is a marvellous thing, and the thoughts we have can become all-ruling in our lives.

Because we are these complex creatures, with thinking and reasoning capabilities, we can often discount the mind as only a small part of what we are. This is totally wrong, and in fact the psychiatric implications of drug use (or more properly drug abuse) are ever present, and can cause major disruption in the life of an addict.

So just what exactly are we talking about here? The psychological aspects of the mind, and how it can control our lives, has been well known to professionals in the field for many years. For example, if one is the child of an addict, be it drugs, alcohol, or whatever, your own mind will rapidly justify to you the use of these substances as being OK. Let's face it, you love your parents and if they are doing it then it's got to be allright and can't possibly be bad for you. You are in effect brainwashing yourself.

Of course, as we know from proven scientific research, it is a fact that drugs have an effect on the brain. It becomes a brain problem. Drug abusers brains get so used to having these chemicals in them that sooner or later, depending on the substance, they actually "talk" themselves into needing those chemicals to function, and so the brain gives the body various (withdrawal) symptoms in order to get those chemicals.

So what can be done to try to beat the psychological side of drug addiction? Getting help is a tried and tested method. Talking to a trained drug abuse counsellor, or other health professional is agood start to finding ways to overcomes your addiction.

Wherever you are, there are many excellent programs available to those with a problem with substance misuse. The best of these will treat both the mind and the body. Because, as we already know, when you initially try to reduce your dependence on drugs, your mind will give your body a variety of withdrawal symptoms in order to get its "fix". However, with professional help it is possible to successfully break the hold that drug addiction has on your body, your mind, and your life.

It's not strictly necessary to go into a rehabilitation facility. However it is proven that this method is very effective. These facilities can be expensive, as also can psychologists/psychiatrists. However, most long term drug abusers find that if they work it out they are spending over a period of time far more on their habit than the cure would cost, and the benefits to your wallet can easily be calculated. Even if it's impossible to put a price on your future wellbeing.
